The Graduate Program in Civil Engineering of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) was the first stricto sensu graduate course in Civil Engineering in Brazil, with the creation of the master’s course in 1965. The doctorate course was created in 1984. Since then the program has significantly contributed to the development of teaching and research in Civil Engineering in Brazil, giving it tradition and quality recognized in academia and in the engineering community in the country. In the last evaluations, the program was very well graded, having received qualification corresponding to an international level program (Grade 6 in the triennium 2008-2010).
Throughout its existence, the program has trained teachers who work today in several Latin American universities and in 47 Brazilian universities, among them the main federal universities. By the end of 2015, the program’s collection had 866 master’s dissertations and 187 doctoral theses.
MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROGRAM
The program presents two areas of focus: Structures and Geotechnics, to which thirteen lines of research are associated, being eight in Structures and five in the Geotechnics. The research lines of the program follow international trends and seek to meet the national demand for engineering technological solutions. The current research lines and their results have attracted a large number of students to master’s and doctoral courses, as well as new projects with industry.
It formed by 14 professors, all with Ph.D. degrees from major universities in Europe, North America and Brazil.
As a reflection of the quality and relevance of the research carried out in the program, it is noteworthy that from the 14 faculty members, 14 are research fellows from CNPq.
HIGH SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTIVITY
The program maintains a high level of publications in journals with wide national and international circulation. The faculty of the program regularly participates in the main national and international congresses in the areas where they work, with a strong participation of students of the program in their publications.
INTEGRATION WITH THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
All permanent professors regularly work in the undergraduate program teaching at least one discipline per semester. Students in the last periods with good academic performance are encouraged to attend some postgraduate courses as electives of their courses, according to the regulations of PUC-Rio’s graduate programs.
Undergraduate students participate in research projects through the institutional program of research fellowships PIBIC / CNPq and from the National Oil Agency – ANP, as well as through individual projects (CNPq, FAPERJ).
INTEGRATION WITH OTHER NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS OF TEACHING AND RESEARCH
The program houses several collaborative research projects between researchers and between programs of other Brazilian and foreign universities and has played a relevant role in the training of the faculty of a significant number of Universities and Research Institutes in all regions of Brazil and in America Latin America, particularly in institutions with graduate courses. Among the national collaboration programs are several PROCAD, PROENGE, and “Casadinho” projects, as well as a PRONEX project. Several program professors also participate as coordinators or as collaborators of Thematic Networks in the Oil Area of the National Oil Agency (ANP).
At the international level, in addition to the partnerships of its professors with professors from foreign universities, several institutional projects of international cooperation are under way. The participation of students in sandwich doctoral programs is also encouraged.
INTEGRATION WITH INDUSTRY
The integration of research activities with the industry occurs at several levels, from the action of faculty members as consultants to public and private companies until the development of partnerships for the development of research projects with a strong technological side. Special mention should be made of several projects with Brazilian companies in the energy sector such as Petrobrás, Eletrobrás, Eletronuclear, ANEEL, as well as projects with municipalities and government agencies. By 2015, 12 projects were underway with the productive sector.
EXPRESSIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY
The professors engaged in research activities participate in various committees of the board of S & T in the country and the Rio de Janeiro state (CAPES, CNPq and FAPERJ) as well as in associations, organizing committees of scientific events and editorial board of national and international journals.
